Fall Land Art Workshop
In this two full day workshop we will explore making art from the land. Participants have the option to camp out on our scenic Wimberley campus, or stay at local accommodations. Friday Evening starts us off with an introduction to the weekend and a shared campfire cookout. Courses start in earnest at 9 am Saturday morning as we process and work with wild clay for pottery making, and explore natural paints and pigments, before breaking for lunch. After lunch we will meet for a short course- natural dyes- before breaking for the afternoon siesta. No courses will run between 2 and 3:35 pm. This gives students the chance to take a break, relax and visit or explore our charming hill country town. At 4:00, we will reconvene and return to clay work, learning hand-building techniques before dinner. Sunday morning the 9 am workshop will cover techniques for basic pit firing for natural pottery, followed by an intro to pine needle basketry. After our lunch break we will run an optional workshop during siesta on burn bowls and burn spoons. At 4 pm the group will rally for a closing—offering a chance to wrap up, ask questions or seek guidance on individual projects. This is a survey course that allows students a basic introduction into the world of making art from the landscape. Students will take home their work but not all projects can be completed in the time allowed. For example, participants' clay will not be dry enough for firing at the workshop. Each skill taught in this workshop could easily take a full day or longer to explore in depth. We also offer individual single day classes if you are looking for a deeper dive. Therefore, although we will teach pit firing techniques, students will leave with their pieces unfired, their work will all leave as work in process, but students leave with the skills to push their projects forward.
Friday and Saturday dinner will be provided but participants should plan on providing all other meals. Camping is available and included in the course cost and bathrooms and running water are also available. All courses are run outdoors in our covered outdoor classroom. Be prepared for the weather conditions.
