Learn friction fire, animal tracking, natural awareness, flint knapping and natural navigation in the stunning landscape along the Pecos river where humans have practiced these skills since ancient times. The records of ancient journeys are visible through riverside archeology- petroglyphs and sites are visible along the river. The remote desert canyon feels like stepping out of time as we join a lineage of humans who knew the land and how to survive through deep connection to it. This is a 5 night trip which travels by boat down the river and camps each night. Learning seesions are broken up by river travel and down time.

This trip is a 3 Day nearly 30 mile light and fast journey down the Devil's River, a true gem of Texas. It is remote scenic and wild, making it an iconic adventure, however it is also a challenging paddle with mandatory portages and the route is often plaiged by afternoon headwinds. Participants will camp light with tarp shelters and minimal gear- fires are not allowed and Leave No Trace Practices and Principles are Mandatory. This experience takes us through one of Texas's most untouched landscapes. One few Texans get to experience. The stunningly clear waters offer fishing and the stars at night can be breathtaking. WAG bags are required by law, so if you have a strong sense of adventure and the sense of humor to pack out your own poo this trip may be for you!

Whether you want to reclaim ancestral skills, build confidence in your abilities, or just unplug and take on a new challenge, join LandWise for an immersive women's survival skills weekend where participants dive into firecraft, knife skills, shelter making, survival mindset. and more.
This is an intro overview course that packs a lot of skill and knowledge into one weekend. Participants will canoe in to the course location to camp and learn in a remote setting in one of Texas's most wild landscapes- The Big Thicket
Tea colored water and crisp sandbars greet participants as we travel by canoe down Village Creek in the Big Thicket corridor. Setting up camp on sandbars along the way we will learn tool use- knife, saw and hatchet, we will build shelters, practice fire- building including friction fire, and review the basics of safe hydration in the wild. Participants will learn handline fishing, hobo tenkara, limb line and trotline fishing to bolster their fishing skills and will hopefully get a chance to process and cook their own catch over their own friction fire. Other topics like foraging and tracking may be woven into the weekend depending on what we see. Participants are resposnible for their own transportation to the starting location. Course is 3 days, 2 nights.
